How to Cook Gyoza the Traditional Japanese Way

Gyoza is one of Japan's most beloved dishes, known for its delicate wrapper, juicy filling, and perfectly crispy bottom. While there are several ways to prepare gyoza, the traditional Japanese method combines steaming and pan-frying to create the signature texture that has made gyoza famous around the world.
At Golden Circle Foods, our gyoza is produced in partnership with a Japanese manufacturer using traditional recipes originating from Hamamatsu, Japan - widely regarded as the home of Japanese gyoza. By following the traditional preparation method, you can enjoy our gyoza exactly as they are served in Japan.
Why the Traditional Method?
The beauty of Japanese gyoza lies in the contrast of textures.
The bottom becomes crisp and golden, while the upper wrapper remains soft and tender. Inside, the filling stays juicy and full of flavour.
This balance simply cannot be achieved by boiling or baking alone.
What You'll Need
A non-stick frying pan with a lid
A small amount of cooking oil (neutral taste)
Water
Frozen Golden Circle Foods gyoza
Optional: Soy sauce for dipping
Optional: sesame chilli oil, spring onions or sesame seeds for serving
Step 1 – Heat the Pan
Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat and add a small amount of cooking oil.
Place the frozen gyoza flat-side down in the pan, leaving a small gap between each dumpling.
Cook for approximately one minute to allow the base to begin browning.
Step 2 – Steam the Gyoza
Carefully pour water into the pan covering 1/3 of the dumplings.
Immediately cover with a lid.
Allow the gyoza to steam for approximately 5–7 minutes, or until the water has almost completely evaporated.
This step cooks the filling while keeping the dough soft and delicate.
Step 3 – Create the Crispy Bottom (Optional - but we like it!)
Once the water has evaporated, remove the lid and allow the remaining moisture to disappear.
Leave the gyoza on medium heat for another 2–3 minutes without moving them.
The underside will gradually become beautifully golden and crispy, the hallmark of authentic Japanese gyoza.
Step 4 – Serve
Serve immediately while still hot.
